E. Selected Options (2)
At the December 2004 meeting, there was a significant amount of discussion focusing on Concepts C & D, and it was generally agreed that I&S should consider a hybrid version of these two options, merging the best features of each into an optimal design concept. This new option, labeled E.1 in this report, received further examination in the January 2005 meeting. Subsequently, I&S continued its study and offered yet another hybrid version, labeled E.2, based on the sketched pictured to the right. This concept takes the spaces flanking the permanent church and shifts them closer to the outdoor courtyard and worship area, which had become an increasingly more usable and important component in the committee’s mind. This plaza can be used for several functions, such as an outdoor banquet area that is part of a seasonal celebration (annual summer picnic and play), a sculpture garden for displaying work by students, and a place for an outdoor wedding and / or reception.
At the February 2005 planning meeting, I&S presented refined concepts E.1 and E.2, and the planning committee’s comments to these are summarized in item 5 of the February 1 st meeting report. Perhaps the most important decision to come out of that meeting, however, was to conclude the report by offering both of these options. In this manner, the plan remains a truly flexible tool for the committees charged with executing the ideas presented within it.
