Home Groups Q & A
Q. Where and when do Home Groups meet?
A. Most will meet in homes. Some groups rotates homes, others choose one location that seems to work best. Occasionally, a “home group” may meet at that the church.. Most meet for two hours. Some will meet weekly, others find that meeting together 2 to 3 times a month works well.
From time to time, we have opportunities for individuals to commit to try a short term series in a Home Group. Currently our “Making Marriage Work” groups are a great example of this type of group. Our Lenten Small Groups are another example. Some home groups have started as one of these types of groups and have "gelled" so well that they desire to keep doing studies together with one another.
Q. How are Home Groups different from the other small groups in this catalog, such as Bible Studies and Fellowship Activities?
A. The Home Group develops around a group of people, perhaps friends already, maybe in the same neighborhood, or the same stage of life. Rather than coming together for just fellowship or to study a particular book – what the group decides to study is secondary to the relationships they desire to form with one another. Home Groups help you develop friendships that will push you further on in your spiritual journey. They are a great place to build relationships and have the opportunity to ask questions. Everyone encourages one another in prayer.
Q. What does the group study?
A. Usually the group decides together what to study. Often, a leader will offer suggestions for possible material. The Small Group Ministries Coordinator is a great resource for ideas.
Q. What about my kids?
A. It depends on the group. Some groups have childcare.
Q. What if I don‘t like the group I try?
A. Try another one! But I do try a group for a couple months before jumping ship – it usually takes a few weeks for groups to gel. Another option is to start a group of your own. We have training material and leader newsletters to help.
Q. How and when do I get into a group?
A. One of the best times to join a group is when we are launching a short term series. However, you are welcome at anytime to join. Fill out the form enclosed in this booklet and leave it in the offering basket, at the Welcome Center or in the Main Office. You can also call contact to sign up.
