What we teach means nothing. What kids learn means everything. We made it a goal to find a curriculum model that engages kids and holds their attention. That curriculum is called "Big City Studio".
About Big City Studio?
Big City Studio Children’s Church connects with kids. It “builds a bridge” to them. Just as Jesus didn’t try to teach the Woman at the Well (John 4) until He had developed a rapport with her, we will connect with the kids before we try to teach them. This is done through worshiping with them, interacting with them, engaging them, having fun with them.
Big City Studio Children’s Church also penetrates a child’s heart with relevant truth from God’s Word. It is our desire for God’s Word to become real and alive to all the children who hear it. We desire to turn on a light inside of each child:
Because of that, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. Pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a light shining in a dark place until the day Christ appears and his brilliant light shines in your hearts. 2 Peter 1:19
With Big City Studio some of the teaching tools build bridges and some turn on the light. Some do both. But everything is designed for one or both purposes.
What Happens at Big City Studio?
Each week the Fellowship Hall is transformed into a movie studio where children (grade K-5) will be together and through props and interaction will experience:
The Curious Thing
A simple object that makes them stop and think about what the lesson might possibly be about. It is a simple object that prompts a little curiosity about the lesson.
Stick to the Script - Scripture Memory Game
A game or activity designed to teach the memory verse.
Z Street Live - Speed Game
The game is usually our Shout It Out phrase. Shout It Out is the main idea of the lesson. The kids learn what the main idea is by guessing letters much like the game “Wheel of Fortune”.
Make a Scene
Make A Scene is acting out the Bible story with kids. There is no rehearsal or lines to memorize. It is ad-lib but closely parallels the scripture text of the story. This allows the kids to SEE, SAY and DO the Bible story.
Knot of the Week
The Knot of the Week is a phrase using the word “NOT”. It is a phrase associated with the lesson. For example: If the lesson was about fear, the “Knot of the Week” might be “Because the Lord cares about me, I will NOT be afraid.”
Impact Skit
The Impact Skit will be a short, fun skit provided by three reoccurring characters that seems to interrupt the program, but instead illustrates the main point of the lesson. The skit will help illustrate how the lesson applies in real life.
Reel Time
Reel Time is a phrase with the word “real” in it. The purpose of the Reel Time phrase is to reinforce the main point of the lesson or to challenge a child to act on the lesson.
Play Back
A Play Back is the review time designed to help remind kids about the Bible story and the main points from the lesson.
